Horsepower vs Torque: What's the Difference?

The age-old debate settled. Learn the physical difference between HP and Torque, how they relate, and which one actually makes your car faster.

Torque

A twisting force. Imagine using a wrench to tighten a bolt. The force you apply to the handle times the length of the handle is torque. It's the "punch" you feel instantly.

Horsepower

A measurement of work done over time. Originally defined to compare steam engines to draft horses. It determines how fast you can hit top speed.

The Golden Formula

The two metrics are mathematically linked. You cannot have one without the other.

HP = (Torque × RPM) / 5252
5252 RPM HP and Torque (lb-ft) are always equal at this exact engine speed.
High RPM Can make high HP with low torque (e.g. F1 Cars).
Low RPM Can make high HP only with massive torque (e.g. Trucks).

So... Which One Matters?

The old saying goes: "Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races." But this is technically misleading. Acceleration is determined by the force delivered to the wheels.
